How to measure up

When buying new furniture it is important to consider the practical realities of the task. The new furnishings need to fit your home perfectly. The measurements of the room and the furniture have to correspond perfectly so access routes and walkways are not prohibited.

Here is a simple and easy guide to help you:

  • Measure the total surface area of the furniture’s resting place. Note down the dimensions alongside a rough sketch.
  • Measure the height, width and depth of the furniture that you are considering ordering.
  • Ensure that the height, width and depth of the furniture are smaller than the desired destination.
  • Ensure that the width and diagonal depths are less than the dimensions of the entry route.
  • Failure to do so will mean that your furniture may not be able to enter the room it is destined for or your home at all.
  • Don’t disregard any potential obstacles such as stairs, ceiling lights and radiators.
